Hamilton - Ontario's government is protecting what matters most by investing in local schools and ensuring that students have the skills they need to succeed.

The province has provided Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board with approval to proceed with the construction of two school additions in Stoney Creek. The combined investment of over $18.8 million is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.

The $8.6 million addition to Mount Albion PS will provide new spaces for 230 elementary students. The $10.2 million addition to Collegiate PS will provide new spaces for 213 elementary students. Hamilton-Wentworth DSB is contributing $6.3 million in board funds, including renewal funds to improve the condition of the schools. In 2019-20, Ontario has provided school boards with $1.4 billion in funding to renew and maintain existing schools.

The additions will also include new childcare centres. Both additions will include three room childcare additions, each yielding 49 new childcare spaces to serve Stoney Creek families.

“The funding for these additions to Mount Albion PS and Collegiate Avenue PS is great news for our community,” said Donna Skelly, MPP for Flamborough-Glanbrook. “This investment will provide a quality learning environment and new opportunities for the children of Stoney Creek.”

“From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce. “Our financing of the additions to Mount Albion PS and Collegiate Avenue PS further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.”
